CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS

About
Conversations With John

On a foggy July morning, Drew Carter, a psychotherapist in semi-retirement, sails off the Golden Gate Bridge in his Honda Accord. The accident leaves him on life support, alive but comatose, and triggers a series of life recollections that play out vividly in his head.

Unable to talk, move or otherwise communicate, Drew can often hear his husband John and others in the room. As Drew moves in and out of a dream state, he is alternately amused, saddened and satisfied with his life as it plays out like a familiar movie before his closed eyes.

On the other side, Drew’s busy life review registers as a flurry of brain activity—the only thing that keeps his doctors from honoring his clear advance directive: no machines, no heroic measures.

His husband, John, hoping Drew can hear him, begins a series of conversations with his silent husband, hoping he'll awaken and relieve John of the unthinkable task of invoking the advance directive and letting Drew go.
